Over the weekend prior to watching the Tuesday performance of Lost Highway I had re-watched the film. Also having thoroughly read the descriptions in Olga Neuwirth's CD booklet, I guessed where to sit : front row, directly under the suspended box, with good views of all of the video screens. It was the perfect position to appreciate what I later described to friends as a ""3D version of David Lynch's film". Extraordinary !

I enjoyed Tuesday's production of Lost Highway at the Young Vic. It was a pleasant surprise to see that this production opened up ENO to a new audience - there were lots of young adults there enjoying the performance in what was a laid back environment. The production itself was excellent - challenging every perception of conventional opera going. Stylistically it was cinematic and gripping. And the 90 minute, interval free, structure made it even more like watching a film. I thought it made it much more accessible to a younger generation who this might be the first taste of ENO for. The orchestra provided an atmospheric soundtrack - that was in keeping with this very fresh approach. It all passed very quickly and it was nice to think that this provides so much scope for inviting new people to ENO's audience. It was engaging, enjoyable and surprising - I know lots of my friends who might not think they'd enjoy opera, but would certainly enjoy this.

We went to Lost Highway not quite sure what to expect. I had not seen the film, and not to my knowledge heard anything else composed by Olga Neuwirth. I am so glad I went. I have to be honest and admit this is not a score I would be rushing to download or buy on CD, but it was tremendously atmospheric. The production was very effective, with the transparent room and the highway/walkway used with imagination. Indeed, one of the advantages of the Young Vic as a venue, and this show in particular, was that the performance took place very close to the audience and it seemed impossible not to be gripped by it. The use of 4 screens placed high up, and showing a range of videos and images, and the sudden changes of lighting, all helped to set and then alter the mood. Add to this some very committed performances - David Moss as Mr Eddy and Valerie MacCarthy as Renee/Alice in particular were extraordinary - and you had a show that was absolutely absorbing. And well done on the seat pricing. The normal rate of £30 was good value; letting those under 30 buy tickets for less than a tenner was a great idea. Liz

During the evening, I really enjoyed the production, in particular the music which I find totally absorbing. I've been watching the films online and really enjoying them, so was set up for a weird evening! I really enjoyed the set and sound design which really portrayed the essence of the piece - dislocated, imprisoned, depthless. I must say none of the performances blew me away - apart from David MOss who was incredible. But as an overall experience, the night was totally unforgettable.
