Read what our audiences had to say about Jonathan Miller's The Barber of Seville
Review from John
Unbelievably this was the first time in its 21 years that I had "caught" the Jonathan Miller production of "The Barber", and despite its 21 years, it came over as fresh as if it had been a new production this season! Everything worked well to create a truly great evening in the theatre, and on stage was an ensemble of really good singer-actor-comedians who were able to put over the words extremely well. Andrew Shore, as ever, was superb, with perfect timing of the visual gags; John Tessier's Count was brilliant both musically and in his acting - he surely has an outstanding career ahead of him in this repertoire; Garry Magee played the role of Figaro with aplomb and Anna Grevelius sang Rosina with distinction. The orchestra was outstanding and Rory Macdonald, conducting a very fine musical performance, is surely a name to watch out for! The Barber really doesn't get much better than this! and the audience thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

The Barber of Seville on 8 October 08.
This was a very good evening's entertainment. I particularly enjoyed Garry Magee as Figaro and Anna Grevilius as Rosina. Andrew Shore is the best Bartolo I know of, very funny, beautifully timed in a production which is a gem. I have seen it four times: it is good to look at, has worn well and does NOT need replacing.
As for mr John Tessier ( the main reason why I booked ) what a class act. The voice is small but has 'ping' and those runs and coloratura ! I am afraid he is for the big time and the Euros. Well done too Mr Rory Macdonald and the sparkling orchestra. Finally, can I say three things: 1) the performance would have been even greater in a smaller auditorium 2) the surtitles added to my enjoyment and 3) keep this standard up please ENO.

Thought Barber of Seville was brilliant. We booked because it was Jonathan Miller's production and he's always interesting. But we thought the performances were excellent, costumes and sets were great. I'd always had a slight blind-spot about Rossini but found this totally entertaining from beginning to end. What a pity it only has 8 performances.

Came to see Barber of Seville last week, and really enjoyed it. Cast and orchestra alike were in great form, and it's always a joy to see the wonderfully inventive Andrew Shore in action. I've followed his career with interest, since seeing him in Kent Opera's "Marriage of Figaro" a LONG time ago, when he absolutely convulsed the audience (and orchestra!) with his portrayal of Antonio. (He was the picture of aggrieved indignation, clutching the severed arm of the statue and carefully stepping over a tray of geraniums - bliss.) Well done, all!
